December as per usual...but slower
Everyone's bustling this time of year but I'm slowing WAY down

Everyone talks about how busy December is, but I confess that this often feels strange to me. Perhaps it’s because I’m hardwired to become a homebody when the days get short. Or because my favorite traditions - burning Advent countdown candles, for instance, and making puzzles at the dining room table - are quiet and slow.
The truth is that my Decembers often look like every other month (though certainly with more decorations). And I like it that way.
Of course, I know that not everyone shares my sentiment for slow and simple. Some of us love the hustle - the string of parties and events and shopping and traditions that fill the days. There are many paths toward having a magical season.
But in the event that your heart is craving some of the same things as mine, here are some ideas to try out this month:

1. Simplifying Gift-Giving
Gifting is a big part of the holiday, but it can quickly become overwhelming. And expensive. That’s why I appreciate anything that helps take the stress out of gifting, but still leaves the thoughtfulness. 100-Dollar Holiday is a good book to read if you’re looking for more on this topic. I also love the “Four Gifts” approach you might’ve seen circulating each year:
Something they want
Something they need
Something to wear
Something to read
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the pressure of shopping, consider a minimalist approach and see how it shifts your holiday experience.
Journal Idea: dedicate a space to plan these four gifts for loved ones, making the process feel more intentional and creative.

2. Getting Outside During the Holiday Season
There’s something magical about bundling up and experiencing the crisp, quiet beauty of nature in December—it’s one of my favorite months to be outside! Here are a few ideas to consider this year:
Nighttime walks: As the days get shorter, I love taking nighttime walks during the longest nights of the year. Add a festive touch by listening to your favorite carols as you stroll under the stars. It’s a peaceful way to slow down, get some fresh air, and soak in the understated beauty of the season. Bonus: neighborhood Christmas lights are fun to see each night.
Feed the birds: Spend some time making simple bird feeders, like peanut butter-covered pine cones rolled in seeds. Hang them in your yard or a nearby park and watch as the birds flock for a treat. It’s a small way to give back to nature and adds a bit of magic to your mornings.
Snowy hikes: If you’re lucky enough to live near snow-covered trails, a winter hike can be a serene escape. Pack a thermos of hot cocoa or tea, take your time, and enjoy the quietness that only a snowy landscape can bring.

3. Cozy Home Moments
While it’s wonderful to get outside, some of my favorite holiday memories are made at home. Here are a few cozy ideas from my journal’s advent calendar that I’m excited to enjoy this December:
Do a puzzle: There’s something so meditative about working on a puzzle during a quiet evening. I love to light candles, play Christmas music, and settle in with a cup of tea or hot cocoa. It’s the perfect activity to unwind.
Countdown candle: I’m embracing the tradition of lighting a numbered candle each night in December, counting down to Christmas. It’s a small but meaningful ritual that brings a bit of light into the darkest days of the year. There’s something magical about watching the flame flicker as you reflect on the day and look forward to the next.
Holiday baking: Whether it’s a batch of cookies or a loaf of bread, baking fills the home with warmth and delicious smells. Peanut butter blossom cookies are our favorites each year, but sourdough bread also tops the list.
Reflecting on Simplicity in My Journal
All of these cozy, simple activities have a place in my bullet journal this month. My Simple Advent Calendar is filled with small joys, from outdoor walks to moments of quiet reflection. It’s my reminder to embrace this season without feeling the need to do it all. By setting the intention to slow down, I’m giving myself permission to create a holiday that’s slow and meaningful.
Journal Prompt: What simple traditions or activities bring you the most joy during the holiday season? How can you create space for these moments this month?
Looking Ahead to 2025…
I’m never one to rush away the current season, but I do admit that the start of a new year gets this journaling girl excited. (New pages! New designs! New goals!)
So stay tuned—I want to check in on your holiday health plans and talk about how to commemorate the best of 2024 soon. But also, I can’t wait to start previewing what’s to come in the new year!
Until then, let’s slow down and enjoy each small, simple moment of this beautiful season.
Wishing you a peaceful December filled with joy! xoxo Steph
